Urawaza

Cover and layout design for a quirky book full of "urawaza", a Japanese word for secret solutions to everyday problems, published by Chronicle Books. Inspiration for the layout was taken from Japanese gameshows and advertisements, and designed to be playful and easy to flip through spontaneously. The cover itself acts as an urawaza with a bellyband that reveals a secret, cheeky grin of encouragement behind it, and also can be used as a bookmark. Each chapter has a different shape and background pattern to distinguish it, and the illustrations by Joel Holland add humor to the often absurd, but helpful, content. The book was a winner in the STEP Inside Design Magazine design annual.
